Remember that Graham Taylor documentary when he did all the swearing and effed up qualification to the 1994 World Cup? Awesome wasn’t it? And you thought it was a devious stitch up by unscrupulous TV types, right? Me too. But it turns out he was complicit in the whole daft endeavour. I know this because Four Four Two magazine commissioned me to tell the previously untold story of the greatest football documentary of all time for this month’s issue. It’s not online but you can read a preview at FourFourTwo.Com – then go and buy an actual copy. It costs £4 but it’s worth it – I interviewed the blokes who made it plus Taylor himself, Phil Neal, Lawrie McMenemy, Les Ferdinand, Carlotn Palmer and everyone else involved. Hilarious stuff in there: Taylor is really open and honest about his time as England manager; Phil Neal, meanwhile, claims the doc ruined his career. I haven’t enjoyed putting together a feature so much in years. There’s loads of other great stuff in this month’s issue of 442 too, so go and buy one.
